On 6 August 2024, Kurdish protester Reza Rasayi (Rasaei) was secretly hanged in Kermanshah Central Prison. His family only learned of his execution after it had already been carried out, and they were forbidden from burying him in his hometown.

Reza was arrested in November 2021 after protests linked to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. He was accused of involvement in the death of an IRGC officer, but throughout the investigation and trial he denied the charges. He later explained that his confessions were extracted under torture. Witnesses who initially testified against him also admitted their statements were made under pressure and fear.

Despite the lack of evidence and expert testimonies in his favour — including from the official medical examiner — the Revolutionary Court dismissed the defence and sentenced him to death. The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court, ignoring the many legal flaws.

Rasayi’s execution is part of a wider campaign targeting Kurdish activists and protesters in Iran. His death sentence and execution were carried out not on the basis of solid evidence but as a tool of fear, using torture-tainted confessions and intimidation to silence dissent.
